During Ken’s career, he has meant a great deal to the BSL in many capacities: player, manager, teammate, and Executive Committee member. Ken has taught his players that there were many other ways of winning than just finishing first, by reminding them that if you did your best and you didn’t come out on top, tip your hat to the other team because they were just a little better than you that day. During Ken Carty’s 20 year career, he has meant a great deal to the BSL in many capacities:

As a player ... Ken says that he's "had to work hard at his trade and is proud of what he's been able to accomplish, and that he has never been afraid to get dirty!" Ken is also "proud to have played 7 years at shortstop in what is perhaps one of the League's strongest infields historically consisting of Matt Collins, Peter O'Leary, and Bill Story". A particular skill that is quite important to Ken's success is his keen knowledge of the game's strategy. That strategic thinking, always one play ahead of most everyone else, has proven a valuable asset for him and his teams during his successful BSL career.

As a Manager ... Ken's been a great leader in his role as a team manager. His great strategic skills are matched equally by his motivating and positive thinking style. In his many years of managing, he's led his teams all over the country on Tournaments, and the World Series (both in B and C). As a manager, he's had nearly 200 career wins and continues to add to those victories just as strongly today as he ever has. He has an unmatched ability to teach the fundamentals of softball to beginners while also keeping veterans focused and "in the game".

As a Teammate ... Ken has always lead by example and made it a point for his teammates to know that he always tries hard to be unselfish and do what is best for the TEAM. It must have shown through because he has been playing with the same wonderful core of players, who to this day remain his closest friends, for more than 14 years. He is also very thankful for the proud support he's received, during his many BSL years, by his Mom and Dad, his family, Steven, and his many BSL friends.

As an Executive Committee Member ... Ken has served for many years on the BSL Executive Committee. His level headed thinking and voice of reason has often been the convincing force and path of action that the League has taken on a number of decisions. His greatly respected point of view has also followed him into the various sub-committees that he's served on like the Advisory and Rules Committees. Ken's sense of "doing what is best" on every issue has been an important part of the direction the League has taken for the last decade.

Ken came into the league as a young, raw talented, shy kid whose teams seemed to always just come up short. Through the years he's worked extremely hard to become a great player, a leader, and a teacher. This can be attributed to his hard working Irish parents who Ken has always been extremely proud of. Ken has taught his players that there were many other ways of winning than just finishing first, which for some, is a very new concept. He teaches his players that if you did your best and you didn't come out on top, tip your hat to the other team because they were just a little better than you that day. At the end of the day, you still did what you loved to do with your friends and that is really why we play this game. Next week, next month, next year no one will remember who won or lost, but you will always remember the friends you went to battle with forever. During the David Hildebrandt tragedy, he was so calming and focused. He was the rock that enabled the Alley family to get through that difficult time. Ken is, and always will be, that family's leader. His players are still learning from him and presumably, he still has more to teach.

He is a very good player who's teams didn't always finish first, but his leadership, knowledge, hard work, character, and integrity made him a winner. His enthusiasm as a coach and player has made playing in the BSL a real pleasure for his teammates. No one can claim that there has ever been a time Ken has given less than 100% on the field or in any league event that he has been involved with. His enthusiasm as a BSL member, coach, and player has made playing in the BSL a real pleasure for many. Ken brings tons of ambition, team spirit, grit, and determination to the game of softball.
